Release Notes

ModelViewer is a utility for previewing HLSL shaders and XNA BasicEffects using the XSE rendering engine. It can also be used with the Microsoft XNA Framework in general and is not XSE-specific. ModelViewer is part of the XSE Game Development Kit.

This is a pre-alpha preview release.
This release is only intended to show the current and eventual capabilities of the utility and some features may be partially implemented, if at all. There are going to be bugs. It is not recommended to use this utility with one-of-a-kind production files, instead create copies to open with ModelViewer.

HLSL shader (.fx) support is not available in this release.

BasicEffect Editor
ModelViewer supports complete customization of the XNA BasicEffect, including live previewing. On-the-fly model and texture compilation removes the need to pre-compile assets and supports all of the XNA model and texture file formats.
Code Generation
Once you've perfected your effect settings, you can have ModelViewer generate C# code to draw a model exactly as it appears in the preview viewport.

Known Issues

Note: This list is only intended to cover the major, well-known issues and by no means is a complete list.

1. BasicEffect lighting color selection is currently broken.
2. Code generation is incomplete and in the beginning stages of development. It is included only to demonstrate the idea of the feature.
3. Code generation syntax highlighting is not implemented.
4. After loading a model, if a single texture is added to the session resources before the effect has texturing enabled, the texture will not be applied to the mesh until a second texture is selected.
Workaround: Add your texture after enabling texturing if you are only using one texture.
